Most everyone loves being on the water. But have you heard that it’s good for you?
At Bon Appétit Restaurant, in downtown Dunedin alongside the Gulf of Mexico for more than 40 years, we know all about being near the water. The rushing waves, a refreshing breeze and a hand-crafted cocktail in hand, nothing beats dining gulf-side, especially when there are proven health benefits. Listen up – this is science!

Experts say the water can improve your well-being in a few different ways. Here are their findings, according to the Huffington Post:

  • Water gives our brains a rest. It’s easy to let stress creep up on us, so it’s important to cut ourselves a break. Our brains work differently near water, marine biologist Wallace K. Nichols tells the Post. “We get a cognitive break because there’s simply less information coming in. Our brains don’t shut down — they keep working, but in a different way.”
  • Water reduces stress. Nichols writes about this in his book, Blue Mind: The Surprising Science That Shows How Being Near, In or Under Water Can Make You Happier, Healthier, More Connected and Better at What You Do. He says all people have a “blue mind” — or “a mildly meditative state characterized by calm, peacefulness, unity and a sense of general happiness and satisfaction with life in the moment” when near water. We can more easily minimize our stress, push past it and refocus on positivity.
  • Water brings us closer to nature. A view of the horizon gives us a sense of balance and oneness with nature. The movement of the tide is natural and rhythmic, steady and predictable. We gain a sense of peace and appreciation by being close to our biggest natural resource.
  • Water brings pleasure to the senses. The constant repetition of the waves ebbing and flowing bring us auditory pleasure. It is a simplified sound — present, but not overstimulating. The waterside color palette — hues of blue and green — are visually pleasing. Color scientists say the color blue encourages communication and brings about a calming feeling. Green is refreshing, promoting feelings of peace and awareness.
